Welcome to Kind and Tasty!
Hello, I’m Jasmina, and I’m very happy that you found my recipe blog. If you are looking for recipes to help you eat more whole plant foods and less processed foods and refined sugar, you are in the right place. All eaters are welcome! My wish is to inspire you and to show you that healthy food can also be beautiful and taste great! That’s where the name “Kind and Tasty” comes from. It represents foods that are as kind to our bodies as well as delicious.
Luxury of Eating Healthy
First of all, let me start by saying that I realize that eating healthy is a luxury. When I was little, not many people talked about what kind of food is good for us. Important was having enough and, if possible, making it tasty.
Unfortunately, many people today still don’t have this luxury, so if you have the possibility and wish, share your food with others. My favourite way to do this is by ShareTheMeal app. One shared meal costs you 80 cents.
Loving Food
I was very blessed to have lived with a grandma who was a cook by profession, so this is where my first interest in food came from. Nana (how we called her) had a small garden behind our home where she planted strawberries, carrots, spinach, potatoes, and other veggies. She showed her love through food. Nana would easily make 30 doughnuts and bring them to school for me to share with my friends. No need to say that everyone loved her. Unfortunately, we lost her to cancer at only 65 years old, and after her, more family members started getting sick and died of cancer as well, some even at a younger age. At the time, I just thought it was all due to bad genetics.
Motherhood and a Quest for Health
Once I became a mother, I started asking myself, is there anything I can do to improve my and my family’s chances of good health, even with bad genetics? I already didn’t smoke, rarely had any alcohol, was physically active, and although I had some work on the managing stress department ;), food seemed like the area I needed to put more attention to. This is when I started investigating and found Dr. Greger and NutritionFacts.org where he talks about nutritional studies in an approachable and fun way. My husband got interested as well, and we decided to give a whole food plant-based way of eating a try during one month. That was in January 2018. We felt so amazing that we just continued with it! 🙂 We are not perfect, but we do our best.
That same year, 2018, we got Flocky (from the German ‘Flocke’, which means ‘snowflake’). This strengthened my desire to consume as few animal products as possible. I would not like Floki to suffer, and therefore not other animals either. She is the best dog one could wish for and we are all totally in love with her. 🙂
In the meantime, I read many books on nutrition and even got a certificate in vegan nutrition from Ecodemy. Ecodemy is a German online school and the training I finished is a state-approved distance learning course by German authority with a completion time of 675 hours. I really wanted to do this correctly. 🙂
Plant-Based Advocate
Am I eating vegan now? Actually no. If I have to put a label on my eating, I would say that I am a vegetarian who mostly cooks and eats whole food plant-based. Am I only eating healthy food? Also no. 🙂 I find that, for me personaly, anything too restrictive doesn’t work. I just try my best. 🙂
So why are all my recipes plant-based/vegan? This is the way I cook now, and based on everything I learned about nutrition until now, I strongly believe everyone can benefit from having more whole plants on their plate, even if it’s just one meal a day or one day a week.
